Design/construction teams realize immediate dividends from the proper use of the design models for clash detection, coordination, and team building Managing an integrated design team in the preparation of a comprehensive, coordinated 3D design model is challenging. As challenging as the technological aspects are, the human aspects are an even greater challenge. Archiect Cliff Bourland from UDG will address these aspects of BIM and VDC as well as lessons learned regarding the level of detail needed in the model in the context of the USC School of Cinema project. The suitability and extensibility of current software platforms for obtaining the necessary detail from the architectural and MEP perspective will be discussed. Getting maximum benefit for the owner and effectiveness for the construction team requires working at overcoming cultural and communication obstacles. Approaches to partnering with the construction team and implementation strategies for using the design model in the field will be discussed.
The full potential of the Integrated Design Process can be mobilized when the product of the design phase is and accurate and detailed construction model. Structural engineers are well positioned to provide this level of accuracy and detail both because of traditional practice and because 3D modeling software for preparing structural shop drawings is a mature technology that has migrated forward to support the design process.
