Integrated Structural design in a BIM Process

The BIM Process

Process:
Architect & Structural – 2D used through concepts, 2D and 3D used in parallel after concepts.  Architect found Revit lacking in support for detailing.  MEP – realized couldn’t develop libraries in the time allotted.  Also, subcontractors already use 3D software for shop drawings.  Owner went to design assist.  For coordination, models uploaded to Navis weekly.

Rebar layouts were standardized with minimum 4#8 ea. side to facilitate panelizing.  Cages were assembled without window openings for stiffness and tolerances.   Boundary elements allowed for tolerance in opening.   Openings were cut and trimmed after layout on formwork.
